Mrs Hutley (Headmistress) and Mrs Thornton (Head of English) would like to invite Hollygirt pupils aged 5 to 14 to take part in an exciting summer challenge.

Write a short story (500 words or less) inspired by the myths, legends and folklore surrounding English Heritage historic places.

To enter, you’ll need to:

1. Gather inspiration from stories of the past at an English Heritage site. Need some inspiration? Have a look at this interactive map to explore the myths, legends and folktales of England:

2. Write a story inspired by your chosen site’s myths, legends and folklore in 500 words or less

3. Submit your story on English Heritage’s entry sheet which can be downloaded at and then email it to Make sure to send us a copy as well to!

One lucky winner from each age category will win an illustration of their story, hand drawn by talented artist Clive Hicks-Jenkins, and their story will be professionally printed. They will also receive a year’s English Heritage membership for them and their family, and a hands-on expert-led learning workshop at one of our historical sites for them and their class!

Plus, one overall winner will get the top prize of a stay in one of English Heritage’s holiday cottages for them and their family!
