Full / Part Time Teacher of Biology
From September 2018
(Head of Department responsibility also available)
Hollygirt School is a small independent school, educating children from the age of 3 up to 16. We take a non-selective intake and have pupils of a wide ranging ability profile. A small number of our pupils are on EHC plans, many have additional access arrangements for examinations. We take a two form entry into Senior School. Classes are small.
We require a well-qualified, suitably experienced (could suit a recently qualified graduate teacher) and dynamic teacher of Biology to teach from Years 7 to 11.
The role could be part time: the exact hours of the position are not yet fixed, but are likely to be in the region of 0.75 FTE. For a suitably qualified person the role could include Head of Science responsibilities. Alternatively, it could be a full time role for a NQT or recently qualified teacher.
The post holder will teach general Science to a class of Year 7, then Biology thereafter. Biology currently teaches the AQA GCSE Specification 8641.
Members of the Science Department (3 in total) are expected to have a degree of flexibility in their ability to teach other Science disciplines in Key Stage 3, though it is more usual for the subject specialist to teach their own subject. There is sometimes the opportunity to teach general Science to Years 5 and 6.
Classes at Hollygirt are small, the maximum number in a Science group is 16 pupils. The post holder has their own traditional laboratory, share of a Lab Technician and good resources. The post offers an opportunity to teach well-motivated, polite, hardworking children in a friendly successful environment. The children are mixed ability and some have diagnosed needs. A small amount of additional classroom support may be available in some lessons but the teacher must be able to differentiate resources to meet the academic and pastoral needs of all.
Members of Hollygirt staff provide a good range of extra-curricular activities and the post holder would be expected to contribute to the programme with clubs/activities based either a Science theme or any personal interest. Members of staff are also expected to have shared pastoral responsibility for a tutor group; they provide examination cover (for a proportion of gained time), occasionally provide cover for absent colleagues and share school duties.
The salary will be on the Hollygirt Scale, which is slightly lower than the national pay scale, at a point commensurate with qualifications and experience. The school subscribes to the Teachers’ Pension Scheme. Candidates invited for interview will be expected to teach a Biology lesson. You will be informed of the group ability profile and given a topic for this.
It is possible for potential applicants to make an appointment to look around the school before making an application, or to speak to the Head about specific matters. Please contact school on 0115 958 0596 or email@example.com.
Closing Date for Applications: Friday 11th May, 9.30am
Interviews: Wednesday 16th May
