Years 7, 8 and 9
During these vital years the Mathematics Department encourages pupil’s enjoyment of Mathematics whilst securing the foundations for their learning. This is done through a variety of teaching styles and activities including problem solving, books, games, videos, interactive puzzles and investigations. The Mathematics Department follows the ‘Key Maths’ scheme of work for Key Stage 3 and basic numeracy is developed and practiced in the class with mental arithmetic exercises. Pupils are encouraged to avoid using calculators excessively. At the end of year 9 pupils sit the national Key Stage 3 examinations.
Pupils are taught in small sets according to their ability, which enables us to vary the pace of the lesson, extending the more able but giving more individual help to those who require it. We hold two weekly Maths Clinics where pupils are free to drop in and access individual help. Pupils are encouraged to ask for extra help if they are unsure of any concepts being studied.
All pupils in Year 7 – 10 take part in the Junior and Intermediate level Mathematical Challenge. We also take a team of pupils to compete in the Team Challenge.
