The Hollygirt Music Department aims to involve as many pupils as possible. Music is offered in the curriculum to all of our pupils from nursery right up to the end of Year 9 where it becomes an options subject.
Music plays a major part in many important events in the School calendar; such as our annual Prize Giving and Carol Service.
At GCSE we follow the Edexcel syllabus. This covers the study of a wide variety of musical styles, including:
- Classical music such as, Handel, Mozart & Chopin
- Twentieth Century styles such as minimalism & expressionism popular music, including the music of Jeff Buckley & Moby
- Music styles from around world.
To aid composition, the Music Department is equipped with computers and Sibelius computer software.
Extra-curricular musical activities are at the heart of music at Hollygirt. In the Senior School there is a School Choir, an Instrumental Group and a Vocal Group. Weekly theory classes are also available to pupils wanting to take Grade 5 ABRSM Theory. Performances include Prize Giving, Senior School Carol Service, informal concerts in School and the end of year Summer Concert. During this academic year the Senior School Choir embarked on a very exciting venture by singing in a mass school choir event at Wembley Arena, as part of Voice in a Million.
We are fortunate to have performed in various venues including the Albert Hall, St Mary’s Church (Lace Market), St Peter’s Church, Derby Cathedral, St Jude’s Church Hall and Hollygirt School Hall. We have also sung at the Nottinghamshire Hospice as part of their patient entertainment programme.
In addition to music in the classroom and extra-curricular music we have a team of qualified and experienced vocal & instrumental teachers, who visit the school on a weekly basis. Individual tuition is available to all pupils from Year 2 upwards and lessons take place during the school day. Instruments currently available are: violin, piano, woodwind (clarinet, flute & saxophone), guitar (acoustic & electric) and singing.
